I’ve been asked if I’m supporting France because of heritage (Baptiste is a French name) Well, no. I’ve come to admire the spirited play of Les Bleus during the tournament and have always been a fan of Zidane. France had a very rough opening round and I’ll admit that I wasn’t sure they’d be able to stop Brazil. But stop them they did.
As for the name – believe it or not, I’m primarily French (Fillion) on my mother’s side NOT my fathers. The name Baptiste was actually an Ellis Island conversion of Baptista. And, yes, you guessed it – my great grandfather was Portuguese.
Was I conflicted during the match? Um…. no. I rooted for France all the way

Predicting allegiances is a tricky business, isn’t it? Half the time I don’t even know my own until the game begins and then there’s no rhyme or reason. I’m a lifelong francophile, but never think of the country in terms of its sports at all–it’s all about the language, history, food & art.
On Sunday, though, it’s all about two people: Messieurs Zidane et Henry.
Allez les bleus!!!
