The media has a tendency to overhype dangers to children that in reality are extremely unlikely to occur. Unfortunately, many parents tend to lose perspective as to what is an acceptable risk and forget how much danger they put their kids in just by driving them to and allowing them to participate in youth soccer.

These Parents Are Delusional
As anyone watching cable TV knows – ultimate fighting is all the rage on pay-per-view. So it was only a matter of time until some parents decided their Âkids needed to ‘train’ to participate in this ’sport’:
Ultimate fighting was once the sole domain of burly men who beat each other bloody in anything-goes brawls on [...]
Evolution Of The Mini-Van
The minivan and soccer will be forever linked in America’s id. Soccer moms (and dads) driving the kids to practice in the practical vehicle became second nature to us. As a kid I swore I’d never drive a ‘moon mobile’ because that’s what they looked like back then. But after our first child was born, [...]
Out Of The Mouths Of Babes – Pt III
Ah children – a never ending source of free labor and entertainment…
Soccer Mom scored some tickets to a UNC Chapel Hill football game recently and took the two eldest. Soccer Dad got to stay home (don’t cry for me – the beer fridge was full, the little ones were angels, and there were better games [...]
Yet You Need A License To Have A Dog
Are you KIDDING me? I never cease to be amazed at what some parents will do to get their kids to be ‘better’:
A soccer mom, upset at her teenage daughter’s performance at a game Saturday, stopped along Interstate 80 and left her there.
Officer Katherine Finnell said the 42-year-old Lincoln woman was ticketed on [...]
Out Of The Mouths of Babes – Pt II
So we’re out at a tournament this weekend – #2’s first real matches with her Challenge team. The girls are wearing their new uniforms and having a ball. #3 (he’s 4 yrs old) is being spoiled rotten by one of the soccer mom’s on the sideline when he asks “Did everyone on the team go [...]
Good Luck Princess…
I guess it hasn’t really sunk in yet, even though I was there at tryouts, was there when she found out she made the team, and have taken her to practice these last few weeks. But only now, the night before her first match, is it really sinking in that my only daughter, Soccer Dad’s [...]
Why Coaches REALLY Want The Hardware
In the endless debates about competition in youth sports, you’ll often hear that the kids don’t care about trophies, only the parents and coaches do. While there may be some truth to that with people who lose sight of why we all do what we do in youth soccer, most coaches I’ve met care about [...]
Little Feet Changes Focus
A year ago we wrote about a foundation called Little Feet, Big Goals that was sending soccer balls to our soldiers to give to the kids in Iraq. Having sent thousands of soccer balls to Iraq, they’ve decided to change their focus and send soccer balls to the kids in Darfur. You simply buy a [...]
Out Of The Mouths of Babes…
As longtime readers know, Soccer Dad and Soccer Mom have our own little small sided team at home with four rather rambunctious children, aged 2 through 10. Well #3 just clued us in to how much we have in store for us. He’s 4 years old right now.
Today I’m working at my desk when I [...]
Getting Ready For Tryouts
Over at Soccer Parents, they have an excellent post up about getting ready for tryouts – a rite of passage in Spring for many soccer players. Only problem is it got posted May 31st, and at least here in North Carolina, most clubs have already finished tryouts. But it’s an excellent post all the same. [...]
Psycho Parents
Remember folks, youth sports don’t create psycho parents – psycho parents ruin youth sports which otherwise provide an excellent experience for our kids! And league officials who sweep bad behavior under the rug only make it worse.
Cheering Good, Coaching Bad
I ran across a new soccer/youth sports blog by a soccer mom who also works for the Albany Times Union (which I read often in college as I went to Rensselaer) Joyce Bassett writes very detailed posts about local youth sporting events as well as more general pieces about issues in youth sports. One category [...]
Just Do It
Baseball Mom recently talked about the coaches who agree to coach the youngest players and how she can’t imagine why they would subject themselves to it:
You guys, one of the hits that came up on a search for my site was "how to coach tball for preschoolers". Why would someone want to volunteer to do [...]
Off Field Activities
Youth soccer is inherently a social sport for the parents. Standing on the sidelines for matches and practices seems to be an ideal situation for socializing. So it isn’t uncommon to have soccer teams doing activities off the field together. Now granted, you want to broaden your child’s social horizons, so limiting their socializing to [...]
