Looking Forward To The Fall Season!

I may not have been able to write like I wanted to, but my summer certainly hasn’t been boring!

Ever Had One Of THOSE Weekends?

SoccerDad had one of ‘those’ weekends, and a helpful parent captured it in one picture trying to preempt a thousand words from Coach!

A Youth Soccer Video Experiment

YouTube and other online video services have exploded in popularity in recent years and the number of available videos on any topic reaches into the tens of thousands if not millions. Yet search mechanisms are still fairly rudimentary. With all that content out there, video is becoming a vital tool for youth soccer coaches to show their players new moves and techniques. The trick is finding good videos. So we’re going to start an experiment here at On The Pitch to see if we can come up with a useful collection of youth soccer videos on YouTube

Rate My Coaches

Someone mentioned this website to me a while back and it just struck me wrong. The site is Rate My Coaches, based on the idea of Rate My Teachers, yet with a much more primitive interface. You can provide numeric and verbal feedback about coaches at high schools and colleges across the US.

But [...]

Soccer Coach Arrested In Sex Sting

A soccer coach in Kentucky was recently arrested in a sting setup by police:

Louisville Metro Police arrested a 25-year-old Louisville man after he allegedly arranged a meeting for oral sex with a detective posing as a 14-year-old girl online, police said.

Which only goes to highlight why background checks are important. However, they can’t [...]

You Know You’re A Coach’s Wife When…

Baseball Mom has a great list “You Know You’re A Coach’s Wife When…” from the perspective of a baseball mom. A number of them could just as easily be for soccer wives!

8. People are paying you for trophies, tournaments, and parties.

9. You have a category in your email address book for [...]

Playing Time Is Not A Punishment

Playing time is one of the most valued things to a young soccer player. It may seem like that would make taking it away a great motivational tool or method of punishment, but doing so is the fastest way to turn a kids off to soccer permanently.

Equitable Playing Time

This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about equitable playing time here, but we recently had a ras hof parent complaints in our Rec league, so we took some action and that spawned an interesting debate among our coaches.

Our league mandates that all Recreational players should play a minimum of 50% of the match, except [...]

NCYSA To Offer New ‘F’ Coaching License

The NCYSA is looking to fill a gap between the Youth I/II Modules aimed at U6/U8 and U10/U12 coaching and the ‘E’ License which is aimed at coaching older players in 11v11 matches. So they have developed a new one day (8 hour) course called the ‘F’ License:

The Coaching Education Department of NC Youth Soccer [...]

It’s The Little Things That Count

As soccer coaches, we often get fixated on the core skills (dribbling, passing, shooting), tactics, and other stuff. Sometimes we forget that it’s often the little things that can make a difference, even ones we think are obvious – but to the kids, they’re not. So here are some little things to keep in mind, [...]

SoccerXpert – An Excellent Coaching Resource

There are a lot of websites out there dedicated to youth soccer. Most are trying to sell you the next best thing in coaching, training, drill books, etc. Everyone needs to make a living, and I can assure you if I could make one writing about youth soccer, I would. But some sites are clearly [...]

Those Moments As A Coach…

It is a common question made to youth soccer coaches, both from experienced coaches as well as people unfamiliar with youth soccer. Why Do You Coach? For me there are a number of reasons, but I think I can say without hesitation that there is one reason above all others: When the players on the team ‘get it’. Not individually, but as a team.

Creating A Coach’s First Aid Kit

One of the most common ‘must have’ items for a coach is a first aid kit. Easy enough, you think, they have them for $10 at Wal-Mart all the time. But you might be surprised at what is in those inexpensive first-aid kits and what is missing. Most experienced coaches will tell you that they [...]

Kentucky Requires Youth Soccer Coaching Licenses

This is somewhat old news, but welcome all the same. John Thomas over at the USYS Blog recently highlighted a new policy in Kentucky related to the licensing of coaches:

Mandating anything in soccer is tough enough. As one of the national staff coaches for US Youth Soccer, it’s hard educating coaches that have been coaching [...]
